Step 1: Select Your Garden Style

Raised Bed Gardens

Raised bed gardening offers a simple and very effective approach to backyard gardening. The beds are entirely self-contained, which allows for greater control and manageability of the garden. Control and manageability are important for intensive (high-density) planting styles, adding soil inputs and amendments, and preventing soil compaction and plant damage.

Additional benefits of raised bed gardening are a longer growing season (soil warms sooner), better drainage, less weeding and maintenance, easy access, and increased comfort while gardening (less stooping and bending).

In-Ground Garden

In-ground gardening is a tried-and-true approach to backyard gardening. The garden patch uses the existing soil. Organic matter and amendments are added to increase productivity. For larger gardens, soil testing is done in order to determine soil composition, the proper amendments, and nutrient ratios.

An additional benefit of in-ground gardening is that the garden generally requires less watering because the plants’ root system is able to tap into moisture deep within the soil.
