During both world wars, amid a global food crisis, Americans strengthened traditions of pragmatism, grit, self-reliance, and patriotism by growing “Victory Gardens” at private residences and in public spaces.
Broadly speaking, the effort was aimed at feeding a nation at war and boosting public morale during lean times. The result was over 20 million food gardens in the US!
